Four Things That Cannot Wait Until Monday

Most electrical faults are inconvenient. These four are the ones that precede fires, and they do not resolve on their own.

🔥

Burning smell

Sharp burning or hot fishy plastic near an outlet, switch or the panel. A connection is overheating inside a box you cannot see.

Sparks or scorch marks

Visible arcing, blackening around a receptacle, or a plug face that has melted.

🌡

Anything hot to touch

A warm outlet, switch plate, breaker or panel door. Electricity that is turning into heat is electricity going somewhere it should not.

🔌

Breaker that will not hold

Trips again the moment you reset it. Reset once, then leave it off and call.

If you smell burning and cannot find the source, switch the main breaker off and call from outside the house. Losing power for an hour is a smaller problem than the alternative.

What Your Electrical Is Doing Right Now

Find yours below, then tell us which one it is when you call — it decides what we bring and how fast we come.

  • Breaker keeps trippingReset it once. If it goes straight back, that is an overload, a short or a ground fault. Leave it off.
  • Half the house has no powerClassic lost leg — one side of your 120/240V service has failed. Needs diagnosing at the panel.
  • No power at all, neighbours fineMain breaker, service connection, or the meter. Not a utility outage if their lights are on.
  • Lights flickering through the houseOne room is usually a fixture. Everywhere at once points at a loose neutral — that one is serious.
  • Outlet warm or discolouredBack-stab connections work loose and heat up. Stop using it and call.
  • Buzzing or crackling panelNever normal. Stay clear of it and call from another room.
  • GFCI that will not resetEither a genuine ground fault downstream or a dead GFCI. Both need finding rather than forcing.
  • Dead outlets in one roomUsually a tripped GFCI somewhere else on the circuit, or a failed back-stab connection upstream.
  • Lights dim when the AC startsA brief dip is normal. A sustained drop means an undersized or failing service.
  • Burning smell with no sourceUrgent. Kill the circuit if you know it, the main if you do not, then call.
  • Shock from a switch or applianceA grounding fault. Stop using it, switch that circuit off, and call today.
  • Power out after a monsoon stormSurge damage to the panel, a burnt service mast, or a lightning-damaged circuit.

What We Fix on a 24 Hour Call

An after-hours electrical call is about making the house safe first and getting the power back second. These are the jobs that actually come up.

🔌

Breakers & Panels

Failed breakers, burnt bus bars, loose lugs and panels that have run out of life. Diagnosed at the panel, not guessed at.

💥

Partial Power Loss

The lost-leg call. Traced from the service entrance inward until we find the failed connection.

🔥

Overheating & Arcing

Burning smells, scorched receptacles, melted plugs. Found, isolated and replaced before it becomes a fire.

💡

Loose Neutrals

Whole-house flickering and appliances dying in pairs. One of the few faults that damages everything plugged in.

Outlets & Switches

Dead circuits, failed GFCIs, back-stab connections that worked loose behind the drywall.

Monsoon & Surge Damage

Storm season takes out panels, service masts and individual circuits. Assessed and repaired, with the insurance paperwork you need.

🔋

Service & Meter Faults

Burnt service connections and damaged masts — including telling you honestly when it is the utility's side and not yours.

💉

Water-Damaged Circuits

After a roof leak or a burst pipe. Circuits isolated, dried, tested and either restored or replaced.

AC & Appliance Circuits

The dedicated circuit that keeps tripping in July. Often the breaker, sometimes the disconnect, occasionally the equipment.

How it works

From Your Call to Power Back On

  1. You call, we answer

A person, at any hour. First thing we do is make sure you are safe where you are standing.

  2. We triage on the phone

A few questions tell us whether this is a panel job, a circuit job or a utility problem before anyone drives out.

  3. Diagnose and price

We find the actual fault, then give you the price to fix it. You approve it before anything is opened up.

  4. Repair and verify

The repair is made, then tested under load and checked with a meter before we leave.

Emergency Electrical Questions

What counts as an electrical emergency?

A burning or fishy smell from an outlet, switch or panel. Anything sparking, scorched or hot to the touch. A breaker that trips again immediately after you reset it. Buzzing or crackling from the panel. Any electrical fault involving water. Total power loss when the neighbours still have theirs. Those are all call-now situations. A single dead outlet or a light fitting that stopped working can wait for a scheduled visit, and we will tell you so rather than charge you an emergency rate for it.

My breaker keeps tripping. Can I just keep resetting it?

No. A breaker is a safety device, and it is doing its job. Reset it once. If it trips straight back, leave it OFF and call. A breaker that trips repeatedly is reporting an overload, a short circuit or a ground fault, and forcing it back on removes the only protection standing between that fault and a fire. If the breaker itself is hot, buzzing or will not stay in the reset position, stop touching it entirely.

Half my house has no power but the breakers look fine. What is that?

Usually a lost leg — one of the two 120V halves of your service has failed, so roughly half the circuits are dead while the rest work normally. The cause is often a failed main breaker, a loose or burnt service connection, or a utility-side fault. Large 240V appliances behaving oddly is the classic tell. It needs diagnosing at the panel rather than guessing at the breakers, and a loose service connection can arc, so it is worth calling rather than waiting.

There is a burning smell but I cannot find anything wrong.

Treat it as urgent. A sharp burning or fishy plastic smell near outlets, switches or the panel usually means a connection is overheating inside a wall box where you cannot see it. Turn off the circuit if you know which one it is, or the main if you do not, and call. This is the single most common warning sign that precedes an electrical fire, and it does not resolve on its own.

Do you really answer at 2 in the morning?

Yes. Firefly Electric runs a 24 hour line for Tucson and Pima County, 7 days a week, weekends and holidays included. Electrical faults do not keep office hours, and an overheating connection is not something to sleep on.

Which areas do you cover?

All of Pima County: Tucson, Oro Valley, Marana, Catalina Foothills, Vail, Rita Ranch, Sahuarita, Green Valley, Corona de Tucson and Three Points.

Are you licensed and insured?

Firefly Electric operates as a licensed and insured Arizona contractor, AZ ROC #ROC-PENDING. You can verify any Arizona contractor licence yourself at roc.az.gov before work begins.
